The leading Termite Protection options that are available in order to reduce your risk of termite attack and minimise termite damage are Physical Barriers, Chemical Barriers and Termite Baiting and Monitoring Systems.

Physical Barrier

A physical barrier is designed to prevent concealed termite entry to a house and is installed at the time of construction in accordance with Australian Standard™ AS 3660.1 – 2000 Termite management Part 1: New building work. It provides Termite Protection by forcing termites to track over the physical barrier enabling termite inspectors to visually identify termite mudding. A durable notice is usually found in the meter box if a physical barrier has been installed.

Chemical Barrier

A Chemical Barrier is a layer of soil against the external perimeter of a house that extends down the footings that has been treated with either a repellent or a non-repellent termiticide, in accordance with Australian Standard™ AS 3660.2 – 2000 Termite management Part 2: In and around existing buildings and structures – Guidelines. A durable notice is usually found in the meter box if a chemical barrier has been installed.

Differences between a Repellent  and a Non-repellent Termiticide

  • Repellent termiticides provides Termite Protection by causing termites to track over the chemical barrier exposing themselves and enabling termite inspectors to visually identify termite mudding.
  • Non-repellent termiticides provides Termite Protection by allowing termites to track through the chemical barrier infecting the termites causing them to transfer the chemical to other termites in the colony to kill them.

Houses and situations that may not be suitable for chemical barrier

It is worth noting that a chemical barrier is not suitable for all types of home construction.

  • Split level homes that have separate infill slabs are often not recommended as the chemical injection and treatment needs to be done inside the house along the internal walls as well as the external walls but most home owners don’t want the chemicals and work done inside their home.
  • Houses with nonexistent subfloor spaces are impossible to treat, minimum crawl space is 450mm.
  • Soil types can also be a factor to consider as some types of soil are too sandy or too clay and the chemicals cannot bind to these soils. If the soil can be removed and replaced with the right type of soil this is advised however cutting concrete to gain access to soil under concrete abutting house is recommended but can be very expensive.
  • Water tanks and outbuildings that are against the house and cannot be removed from perimeter of house as the chemical barrier must be continuous around the perimeter.

Termite Protection - TERMITE BAITING & MONITORING SYSTEM

Termite Baiting and Monitoring System

A Termite Baiting and Monitoring System provides Termite Protection by intercepting foraging termites in stations placed at intervals around your home and then to concentrate their feeding in the stations by providing them with a preferred food source. This food source is then taken back to feed the colony resulting in the elimination of that colony. A durable notice should be permanently fixed to the building, often found in the meter box and a Certificate of Termite Treatment provided.

Termite Baiting and Monitoring Systems are generally easier and less intrusive to install than Chemical Barriers and are suitable for all types of home construction.
